The Manhasset Board of Education recognized seven 11th grade students from Manhasset Secondary School for their award-winning spoken word poems at the June 6 meeting. Students shared their powerful and personal poems with the board and audience members, providing insights into a wide range of student experiences.

Classroom competitions were held earlier this spring and the seven students were selected by their peers as the best in their classes. Winners presented their poetry to other students and faculty in the school’s Black Box Theater in May.

Spoken word, Manhasset’s version of a poetry slam, was created by National Board Certified English teacher Loretta Schuellein. She and fellow teachers Andrew Clark, Dr. Margarita Leonard and Eileen Madigan collaborated on this popular and important unit.

Congratulations to Alize James who took first place in the competition. Also honored were Marco Falcone (second place), Tanya Wummer (third place) and finalists Christopher Chan, Aiden Kearns, Conor Slevin and Miguel Tacheci. Everyone did a tremendous job expressing themselves verbally and in writing. Each received a certificate of excellence from the Manhasset board and superintendent of schools Vincent Butera.
