David Delaney-Granados, a seventh-grader at Mineola Middle School, was recognized at the Nov. 14 board of education meeting for being the winner of the school’s first Geography Bee.

This schoolwide competition was sponsored by National Geographic and comprised of three competitions including a schoolwide preliminary exam that covered a wide range of geographic knowledge. The top 40 scorers then competed through seven rounds of questioning in person and then finally the top 10 students competed in the rigorous final rounds. David was the last student standing, winning the championship round with a question about the British empire. David will now take an online exam to see if he qualifies for the state finals.
