Music students selected for All-State

Eight highly talented musicians from North and South High Schools have been selected for the prestigious and very competitive 2019 New York State School Music Association All-State Conference, to be held in Rochester, Dec. 5–8. In addition, eight students are alternates for the event.

North High School All-State music students are: Leeor Elias (bass 2, Mixed Chorus) and Ashley Schlusselberg (soprano 1, Mixed Chorus). Additionally, Alex Mousazadeh (bass 1) and Madeline Yang (flute) have been selected as Alternates. These students are taught by Dr. Pamela Levy, fine & performing arts department head/vocal music teacher, and Joseph Rutkowski, instrumental music teacher.

South High All-State music students are: Christiana Claus (flute, Symphonic Band), Jaehyun Kim (violin, String Orchestra), Benjamin Rossen (French horn, Symphonic Band), Grace Song (flute, Wind Ensemble), Mia Wang (violin, Symphony Orchestra), and Ann Zhang (violin, String Orchestra). Additionally, six students have been named as Alternates for All-State performing groups: Diana Chu (piccolo), Talia Katz (soprano 1), David Kim (cello), Oliver Lee (violin), Shalin Madan (cello), and Lia Seo (flute). These students are taught by Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head/instrumental music teacher; Mark Boschen, band teacher; and Dr. Janine Robinson, vocal music teacher.

At the All-State Conference, sponsored by NYSSMA, the state’s finest student musicians will perform together in various ensembles. Thousands of students auditioned for this competition last spring at solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state.
