Hillside Grade School third-graders in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District are enjoying new dictionaries thanks to the New Hyde Park-North Shore Elks Lodge 2107.

The students were visited by Elks members Paul Glaz and Jim Unger, who presented each third-grade student and their teachers with their own copy of “A Student’s Dictionary.” Mr. Unger pointed out key pages in the books, showing the students a listing of the longest rivers and largest bodies of water, facts and locations of different countries, biographies of United States presidents, maps of the world and much more.

“It’s important for children to get an education and understanding of how to speak and spell,” Mr. Glaz said. “A dictionary is a primary reason the students can learn.”

Principal Beth Torreano expressed her gratitude to Mr. Glaz, Mr. Unger and the New Hyde Park-North Shore Elks Lodge 2107 for the dictionaries, which they have been donating to the school’s students for more than 10 years. She also encouraged the students to bring them home and shared what they learned during the visit with their families.
