Second-graders in Tracy Onorato’s class at New Hyde Park Road School in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District are creating their own version of a Thanksgiving parade using the Stop Motion Animator app on their school’s Chromebooks during library class.

Under the direction of librarian Andrew Cummings, students read “Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet, which tells the history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The class had a discussion on how things move and began brainstorming how to make their own parade float. Using Legos, cotton balls, Play-Doh, cardboard and a variety of other items, students worked in groups using the design and engineering process to create unique float designs. They then practiced moving their creations in front of the app, recording it each time to see how they could improve their project.

Mrs. Onorato said the students have been highly engaged in the activity, taking part in in-depth discussions about their designs and enjoying using the Chromebooks to make their creations come to life.
