The Broadway Education Alliance has announced three North High students as 2017-2018 student nominees for the title of Best Actor and Best Actress at The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance on May 19 at Pearl Studios in Manhattan.

All three students have been selected based on their performances in the North High production of The Phantom of the Opera. Daisy Korman and Ashley Schlusselberg are each nominated for the Best Actress award for their performances as Christine and Carlotta, respectively, and Dinghuan Li is nominated for the Best Actor award for his performance as The Phantom.

Korman, Li, and Schlusselberg and are among fifty students from the Greater New York area who have been nominated for their roles in an officially licensed production of a Broadway musical during the 2017-2018 academic year. The North High production of The Phantom of the Opera, presented on April 19 and April 21, was adjudicated by a team of professional industry performers and educators who scored student performances according to a formal rubric.

As part of the competition, Korman, Li, and Schlusselberg will participate in a performance master class taught by a team of Broadway professionals, followed by a talent showcase that will be judged by Celia Keenan-Bolger, of The Cherry Orchard, The Glass Menagerie, Peter and the Starcatcher, Amy Rogers, the director of the BFA Musical Theatre Program at Pace University), Merri Sugarman of Tara Rubin Casting, and Alton Fitzgerald White, who played Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King.

Winners of the Roger Rees Award will represent the Greater New York region at The Broadway League Foundation’s Jimmy® Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, in June.

The Roger Rees Awards recognize the importance of theatre arts education and celebrate the exceptional life and career-long artistic excellence of Broadway actor and director, Roger Rees.
