The National Geographic Society has named Tamas Smulovics, a seventh-grader at North Middle School, as one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2020 National Geographic GeoBee State Competition. The contest will be held at the New York State Museum in Albany on March 27.

The entire North Middle student body watched their top 40 students compete in their school GeoBee in December. Tamas won first place in the school bee, and then took an online qualifying test from National Geographic to determine his eligibility to advance in the competition. Tamas successfully achieved one of the top 100 scores in New York, thus qualifying for the state competition.

The state competition is the second level of the National Geographic GeoBee. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three competitors in each State Championship, and the first-place winner will represent their state in the 2020 National Championship at the National Geographic headquarters in Washington D.C. in May.

The National Geographic GeoBee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. GeoBee competitions are open to schools with students in grades four through eight. This year, an estimated 2.4 million students in the United States and territories competed in the GeoBee, with 8,661 students being named school champions.
