Students in Port Washington are planting a seed of community service through Plant a Row for the Hungry, a national program that works at a grass-roots level to end community hunger. With the help of Port residents and local organizations, members of the Art Honor Society at Paul D. Schreiber High School have helped deliver over 15,000 pounds of produce to local families since the program’s inception six years ago.

“We are so proud of our students for their selflessness and eagerness to give back to the community,” said Dr. Kathleen Mooney, superintendent of Port Washington Union Free School District. “Through Plant a Row for the Hungry, our students have the wonderful opportunity to make a positive impact on residents by expressing their artistry and individuality while also showcasing their kindness.”

For the third year, Schreiber’s AHS has worked with local churches, synagogues, Scout troops and organizations in Port Washington to spearhead Plant a Row for the Hungry. Through this initiative, students make the community a bit more colorful and a lot greener. AHS members painted several “What we love about Port Washington” planters that were placed in front of businesses and learning centers throughout the area to encourage residents of all ages and backgrounds to grow their own vegetables and give back to the community.

Sponsored by the Garden Writers’ Association, Plant a Row for the Hungry was founded in 1995 with a goal to deliver fresh, nutritional food directly into the hands and stomachs of the area’s hungry families. Food Gatherers and their partners extend an invitation to gardeners and farmers across the country to join the annual campaign to alleviate hunger in our community.
