Port’s stairway to a vibrant education

The Island Now

South Salem Elementary School in Port Washington stepped into the 2019-2020 school year with a newly decorated stairway and bathroom walls, funded by Salem’s Home School Association committee. During the first week of school, Pia Ferrante, principal of Salem, was joined by four students; Superintendent of Schools Michael Hynes; and three members of Salem’s HSA for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The interior of a school and its aesthetic sets the tone for students and can largely impact their moods, motivation, and behavior,” said Hynes. “Artwork provokes thought among students and helps transform the culture of a school.”

From concept and design to production, Chief Graphix in Port Washington used wrap material technology and cast vinyl to add a splash of color up Salem’s three stairways and restrooms. Along each stair of the building’s staircases are inspirational words, as well as book titles and names of authors. In one of the bathrooms, there’s a large mural of a globe with the phrase, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
