The Model United Nations team at Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington secured top honors at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Model UN Conference on Dec. 14, taking home eight awards. Schreiber’s students met with several neighboring high schools to discuss current global issues in a real-world context.
“Congratulations to our Model UN students who competed at the POB Model UN Conference this past weekend,” said Dr. Michael Hynes, superintendent of Port Washington Union Free School District. “Model UN encourages our students to become global citizens and hone their public speaking skills. We are so proud of the hard work and dedication each one of our students and club advisors puts into each conference. Keep up the great work.”
The students focused on solutions to important policy issues and real-life topics in the areas of cyber warfare, strengthening of security and cooperation in the Mediterranean, genetically modified organisms, overfishing, improvements of agricultural output, energy efficiency, fair trade agreements, regulation of cryptocurrencies, counterfeit documents and currency, exploitation of endangered species, reform of extradition laws, technological/internet regulation, artificial intelligence, inequality of technological advancement, persecution of Christian minorities, war in Darfur, UN peacekeeping troops reform, child refugees, juvenile justice, increasing youth drug use, Yemen famine, access to medical supplies, disaster preparedness, dangers of propaganda and hate speech, illicit trafficking of cultural property, protection of underwater heritage sites, waste disposal regulations, displacement of species due to urbanization, thawing of the permafrost, euthanasia, freedom of the press and protection of indigenous peoples.
Schreiber’s honorable mentions at this conference include Youmin Park, who represented Sen. Joe Manchin III in the U.S. Senate, Karl Hirsch, representing The Shogun of Japan in Historical Committee, Sam Rothenberg, representing Indonesia in the United Nations Environmental Program, Katie Winter, representing the United States in the United Nations Development Program, Ross Lauterbach, representing North Korea in UNDP and Gabrielle Gitman, representing the United States in the Disarmament & International Security.
Shreiber’s Best Delegates include Adam Salzman, representing Trinidad and Tobago in the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean and Max Goldman, representing Argentina in Food and Agriculture.
