First graders in Christina Kingsley’s class at Floral Park-Bellerose School enjoyed a recent science lesson on the life cycle of a plant using mobile furniture.
The classroom furniture was separated into different areas of the room to allow the student-botanists to work at different stations, where they investigated if a plant can grow without soil, identified the different parts of a plant, sorted seeds to compare and contrast them, and read about plants.
The district equipped classrooms with new mobile furniture this year to allow for a more collaborative learning environment. Students are now able to move their seats and desks around the room to work with peers.
“The flexible seating makes it easier to work in groups,” Ms. Kingsley said. “It enables the students to pick the best spot to work, which has translated into increased effort in class activities.”
Besides working in different stations during the science lesson, the first graders used a variety of different seats, such as chairs with wheels, cubes, and comfy floor seats.
