Sewanhaka recognizes Class of ’19 valedictorian and salutatorian

Sewanhaka High School announced the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2019, Amrita Shah and Sameer Khan.

Amrita has a weighted GPA of 100.28. Throughout her years at Sewanhaka High School she has participated in various clubs and organizations. Amrita has been an active member of the Class Board of 2019, where she serves as vice president. She is also a talented musician and plays flute in symphonic band, marching band, jazz band and pit orchestra, as well the district’s band and marching band. Amrita is the president of Mathletes and an officer in the Green Club. She is also the editor-in-chief of the school yearbook, The Totem.

Amrita is passionate about science and has been an active member of Science Research, as well as the vice president of the Women in Science club. This year, she participated in an internship at New York University as part of the Courant Institute Girls’ Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Summer Program. As part of this program, she researched the associations between climate change and adverse birth outcomes. In 2017, Amrita participated in an internship with the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition, Students and Scientists Research Program.

In addition to these extracurriculars, Amrita has been inducted into the National Honor Society, as well as the department-specific Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Science National Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society. She is enrolled in Advanced Placement government, calculus, chemistry and environmental science classes.

Next year Amrita would like to attend either Columbia University or University of Pennsylvania and major in biochemistry.

Sameer has a weighted GPA of 99.8. His extracurriculars include Class Board, Mathletes, Model UN, Science Olympiad and Sewanha-Con, where he serves as vice president and helps organize and schedule events. He is also an associate editor on the school’s newspaper, The Chieftain, where he has been consistently wrote articles throughout his high school career.

Sameer is a member of English, math and world language honor societies. This year he was recognized for his achievements with an award from the Elmont East End Civic Association.

Sameer is enrolled in Advanced Placement calculus, physics, psychology and government classes. Next year, he would like to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York Institute of Technology or Stony Brook University. His intended major is computer science.
