Soar into Spring and Summer with GNPS Community Ed

The Great Neck Community Ed program is looking forward to warmer days ahead with the release of their spring and summer course catalog. With the addition of several new courses as well as the return of old favorites, this season is sure to be an exciting one full of learning, growth, and new possibilities.

The Community Ed Spring/Summer 2020 Catalog has been mailed out, and registration is in progress. Residents who have not received a catalog may request one by contacting Community Ed at (516) 441-4949, or gncontinuinged@greatneck.k12.ny.us. The full catalog is also available online at www.greatneck.k12.ny.us/ce.

The Community Ed program is located at 30 Cumberland Ave. in Great Neck, one block south of Northern Blvd. and Lakeville Rd. Most classes begin in April.

International Trip

Community Ed is pleased to present an opportunity to travel from New York to Italy from April 22–29. This eight-day trip through the Collette travel company includes some of Italy’s most popular destinations with stops in Rome, Florence, and Venice. Per person prices ($3,749/double, $4,549/single) include airfare, first-class hotel accommodations, taxes and fees, and sightseeing led by a professional tour manager via deluxe air-conditioned motorcoach. Day Trips

Community Ed also offers unique day trips around New York and beyond. These one-of-a-kind experiences include luxury coach bus transportation, meals, and private docent-led tours, so participants can relax and enjoy the day.

Upcoming trips in and around New York City include The “New” MoMA on May 21, the New-York Historical Society on May 28, the New York Botanical Garden on June 10, and the Brooklyn Museum on June 19.

Additionally, the following out-of-state trips are scheduled: Philadelphia Museum of Art on May 12, and The Berkshires of Massachusetts: Art and Culture Tour on August 12–14. All trips depart and return to the Community Ed center on Cumberland Ave.

Theater Trips

Recent theater trip offerings have included Tina Turner, West Side Story, Company, Oklahoma, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Cher. Some trips include meals before or after the show; others, with meals on your own. Due to time constraints, theater trips are announced through email only – be sure to register your email address to stay informed!

Creative Arts & Crafts

Sign up for one of our many art courses, such as calligraphy, fused glass, painting, pottery (on the wheel and hand-building), printmaking, silversmithing, and sketching. Our building is equipped with jewelry, stone, painting, and pottery facilities. Our newest creative courses include embroidery, crochet, aromatherapy, “Kraslice” egg decorating, and solar plate printmaking.

Fitness and Movement

Get moving with activities like aerobics, weight training, water exercise, yoga, meditation, Pilates, Zumba, Tai Chi, meditation, and several different styles of dance.

Foreign Languages

Learn a new language or improve conversational skills with beginner through advanced courses in Chinese, French, Italian, Hebrew, Spanish, and Yiddish.

Enrichment & Learning

New courses in literature, history, and politics join a popular line-up of book groups, writing workshops, and group discussions about current events, sports, and more.

Games and Hobbies

Learn a new game or play with friends. Community Ed offers Bridge, Canasta, and Mah Jongg, for beginner and advanced levels.

Music, Performing Arts & Entertainment

Take the stage with the Cumberland Singers or as a member of the new Cabaret or Improv courses! Instrumental courses can teach beginners to play the piano or the guitar.

Personal Development

Learn about accident prevention and get savings on car insurance by completing a Defensive Driving course, or join an engaging community with REAP (Retired, Energetic, Active People). New classes include Psychology of Well-Being and Healthy Grief.

Classes for Teens

Offerings for teens include exam preparation courses for the ACT, PSAT, and SAT, as well as NYS-approved Driver Education. Workshops offer guidance for a college scholarship and grant applications.
