The fencing program at South High School has concluded their most successful season in school history. This winter season, for the first time ever, both the boys and girls varsity sports team each won the Nassau County Championship in the same sport.

“Winning a County Championship is no easy feat. It requires practice, skill, and a willingness to never quit,” says Joshua Baravarian, coach of the boys varsity team at South High.

This winter season, both the boys and girls fencing teams at South finished the regular season undefeated (13-0 and 14-0, respectively), earned the Large School Division Championship title, advanced to become the Regular Season Champions, and ultimately won the Nassau County Championship title.

The boys team was lead by senior captain and two-time All-Long Island selection Kevin Feng, and the foil trio of Gabriel Magidson, David Wang, and Kevin Zhang.

The girls team was led by senior captain Muen (Mary) Ye, who is the 2019 Nassau County Saber Individual Champion and a two-time All-Long Island selection, as well as Mei Lin (Mandy) Li, who also took a gold medal at the Nassau County Individual Championships and posted an impressive 34-0 record this season.

The Great Neck South boys varsity fencing team is coached by Joshua Baravarian, who teaches at South High. The Great Neck South girls varsity fencing team by is coached by Nassau County 2019 Coach of the Year Catie Sagevick, who teaches at South Middle School.
