South High juniors named regional finalists in global investment competition

A team of seven juniors from South High School has been named a Regional Finalist in the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition.

This year’s investment competition included more than 5,600 teams spanning 35 countries. The South High team, named REBELS Investment Group, placed among the top 20 teams in the nation and was named a Regional Finalist.

South High team members are Oscar Fang, Collin Li, Matthew Tsui, Isabel Wang, Mengyu (Amy) Wu, John Xie, and Rick Xu.

For the competition, team members collaborated to examine a client profile and develop a strategy to meet the client’s short and long-term investment goals. Over the course of 10 weeks, students developed an investment strategy, analyzed industries and companies, and built a portfolio using $100,000 in virtual cash.

Teams are judged on the strength and creativity of their strategies, not on the amount of money they make in their portfolios. Regional Finalists will compete virtually in March to determine which teams will advance to the Global Finale in May.

The South High team is advised by Nicole Spinelli, physics and science research teacher at South High.
