The Performing Arts Department at South High School is the recipient of a $1,000 grant from the Mockingbird Foundation, a non-profit organization created and run entirely by fans of the band Phish.
“On behalf of the entire South High Performing Arts Department and all our students, I’d like to thank the Mockingbird Foundation and Phish fans for supporting our music program through this generous grant,” said Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head.
The Foundation awards “tour grants” to support music education in schools located near venues where the band performs. This unsolicited grant was awarded to South High in celebration of Phish’s performance on Dec. 29 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Tour grants are “part of a long-standing effort by the Phish fan community to spread the love of music,” explained Ellis Godard, Executive Director of the Mockingbird Foundation. The grant to South High marks the Foundation’s 45th grant in New York State.
Founded in 1996, the Mockingbird Foundation is a leading grant-maker in music education for children. Since its inception, the organization has awarded 425 grants totaling more than $1.4 million across all 50 states.
