Students enrolled in South High’s anatomy and physiology class recently visited the Northwell Health Radiology Department at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park as part of the Spark! Challenge.

During their visit, students met with a variety of medical professionals, including radiation therapists, radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, oncology nurses, information technologists, medical physicists, and hospital administrators. The students also viewed demonstrations of the CT (Computerized Axial Tomography) machines used to create patient images and treatment plans, and the LINAC (Linear Accelerator) machines that deliver radiation treatments.

The South High students are now working on an advertisement and informational video about one of the radiology careers to demonstrate what they learned during their visit. These projects will be entered into a contest sponsored by Northwell Health, and all submissions will be presented at a Spark! Challenge celebration event in April at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

The Northwell Health Spark! Challenge introduces high school students to a variety of career paths in health care. More than 700 students across Long Island participate in the program.
