Teams from South Middle School won first and second place at the Long Island Regional Middle School Science Bowl at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Jan. 30. This is the third consecutive year that a team from South Middle has won this regional competition.
Twenty teams from Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in the event, which covers a wide range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math. The final round consisted of two teams from South Middle competing in a head-to-head double-elimination contest.
Members of the first-place team are Colin Hu, Luke Huang, Emily Tsui, team captain Erin Wong, and Zican (Arthur) Zhang. Members of the second-place team are Ivan Chiang, Brandon Kim, Kira Nguyen, Ethan Wu, and Alexander Xu. Both teams received trophies.

The South Middle team that came in first place at this regional event will advance to the National Middle School Science Bowl, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.
The teams are coached by Tobias Hatten, science department chair, and Diane Caplain, a biology teacher at South Middle.
The Department of Energy National Science Bowl was established in 1991 and is one of the nation’s largest science competitions. This year, more than 4,500 middle school students will compete in 50 middle school regional tournaments, leading up to the National Middle School Science Bowl competition in April.
