The Island Now

The Great Neck South Middle School Music Department is proud to present its Spring Concerts on Monday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 22, both evenings starting at 7:30 p.m. The art department will present its Spring Art Show the week of May 20. All events will be held at the school, 349 Lakeville Road.

Spring Concerts

The May 20 Concert will feature Senior Orchestra, the Senior Chorus, the Band 7 and the Band 8. Classical selections performed will feature music by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Handel. Popular works by Andra Day and music from Newsies, Star Wars and Les Miserables will also be heard.

The May 22 Concert will feature the Orchestra 6, Chorus 6 and the Band 6. Classical selections will feature music by Bach, Rossini and Richard Rodgers. Popular works by John Lennon, Rachel Platten and music from Aladdin, Superman, James Bond, Batman and The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will also be performed.

As always, the concerts are free and the brief programs (about an hour) offer perfect opportunities to introduce children from pre-K through grade 5 to the concerts they may be a part of in the future.

Instrumental students are taught by Department Head Alan Schwartz and Mark Boschen. Choral students are taught by Korey Coppola.

Spring Art Show

The Art Show will be on display in the school lobby for the week of May 20. The exhibit will be available during school days from 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m., and concertgoers can enjoy the Art Show during the concert performances on May 20 and 22.

The exhibit will feature the work of eighth-grade students enrolled in Art Foundations classes, as well as a variety of drawings, paintings, and prints. South Middle’s art teachers are Department Head Cynthia Smith, Karla Krupala, and Jennifer Shea.
