The Island Now

The Music Department and Art Department of South Middle School are proud to present the Winter Concerts and Art Show on Monday, Dec. 10 and Tuesday, Dec. 11. Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium, 349 Lakeville Rd.

The concert on Dec. 10 will feature the Senior Orchestra, Senior Chorus, Band 7, and Band 8. Classical selections include music by Mussorgsky, Vivaldi, and Handel. Popular works by Leroy Anderson, Leonard Cohen, and music from “The Greatest Showman” will also be heard, along with traditional holiday classics.

The concert on Dec. 11 will feature performances by Orchestra 6, Chorus 6, and Band 6. Classical selections include music by Strauss and Dvorak. Popular works by Elton John, Irving Berlin, Cy Coleman, and Stephen Sondheim will also be performed, followed by a holiday bobsled ride for a grand finale.

Instrumental students are taught by Music Department Head Alan Schwartz and Mark Boschen, assisted by Andrew DeNise. Choral students are taught by Korey Coppola.

Concerts are free and each lasts about an hour. According to Schwartz, these concerts “offer perfect opportunities to introduce children from pre-K through grade 5 to the concerts they may very well perform in in the future.”

Concertgoers can also enjoy the South Middle Winter Art Show, which will be on display in the school lobby during the week of Dec. 10. The exhibit includes a variety of drawings, paintings, and prints created by students in grades six through eight. Art students are taught by Art Department Head Cynthia Smith, Karla Krupala, and Jennifer Shea.
