South Middle offering concerts and art show

The Island Now

The South Middle School Music Department is proud to present its Spring Concerts on Monday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 16, both evenings starting at 7:30 p.m. The Art Department will meanwhile present its Spring Art Show the week of May 14. All events will be held at the school, 349 Lakeville Road.

Spring Concerts

The May 14 concert will feature the Senior Orchestra, the Chorus 7/8, and the Senior Band. Classical selections performed will include music by Bach, Mozart, and Leonard Bernstein. Popular works by Bebe Rexha and music from Wicked, Hamilton, and The Wizard of Oz will also be heard.

The May 16 concert will feature the Orchestra 6, the Sixth-grade Treble Chorus, and the Band 6. Classical selections will feature music by Handel, Swearingen and Leonard Bernstein. Popular works by Stevie Wonder and music from The Little Mermaid and The Incredibles will also be performed.

As always, the concerts are free and the approximately hour-long programs offer opportunities to introduce children from pre-K through grade 5 to the concerts they may very well perform in the future.

Instrumental students are taught by Department Head Alan Schwartz and Mark Boschen. Choral students are taught by Shelley Willcox.

Spring Art Show

The Art Show will be on display in the school lobby the week of May 14. Concertgoers can enjoy the exhibit at performances on May 14 and 16. The art show will also be available during the school day, from 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Featured will be the work of the eighth-grade Art Foundations classes, as well as a variety of drawings, paintings, and prints.

South Middle’s art teachers are department head Cynthia Smith, Karla Krupala, and Geoffrey Mead.
