Great Neck South Middle School science competition club members Arthur Zhang, Richard Oh, and Ivan Xu earned fifth place at the regional Future City Competition held in Manhattan on Jan. 19.
Future City encourages students to work collaboratively to find solutions to authentic citywide sustainability issues. The theme of this year’s competition was “Powering Our Future,” and participants were challenged to design a resilient power grid that can withstand and quickly recover from a natural disaster.
The students from South Middle designed their future city to survive a hurricane, the most pressing natural disaster on Long Island. To demonstrate their plan, students created a simulated city using a computer-aided design program and constructed a three-dimensional model using recycled materials.
During the New York City regional competition on Jan. 19, students presented the features of their future city followed by a question and answer period by the judges.
The students were led by South Middle science competition club advisor Doris Stanick.
Future City is a project-based science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) program that encourages students in grades 6-8 to imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. The Future City Competition includes more than 40,000 middle school participants from around the world.
