Congratulations to Manhasset Secondary School students Samantha Chen, Richard Lee and Serena Zhao for their success at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona. Approximately 1,842 finalists, who represent over 80 countries, competed at this renowned fair.

Samantha and Serena won third place Grand Awards of $1,000 for their research in Environmental Engineering. Richard qualified as a Finalist in the competition.

During ISEF, Serena was invited to attend the Nobel Laureate and MacArthur Fellows symposia, as well as a private luncheon, where she was selected to ask a question to the group of Nobel Laureate and MacArthur Fellows panelists. Serena asked: “How has cooperation (local and international, personal, corporate, etc.) played a role in your work (both within research specifically and within all of your science-related work), and what advice do you have for those of us who want to foster international relations and cooperation within the scientific community? (Coming from someone who is an avid environmentalist and sees cooperation as a key to helping Earth and humanity within all research fields).”

Students worked under the direction of teacher Alison Huenger.
