The Village School has again been named a W!SE Blue Star School having excelled on the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test. This marks the eleventh time the school earned this award, which will be presented in November. The award is for the 2018–19 academic year.
In order to receive this designation from W!SE, a school must meet set requirements regarding the number of students taking the Financial Literacy Certification Test and their overall achievement rate on the exam. Village School students receive financial literacy education from social studies/economics teacher Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein.
David Anderson, W!SE executive vice president, said of the Village School, “We are truly proud of your students’ accomplishments, and we are equally proud of your teachers who helped them become Certified Financially Literate. Through your personal finance instruction, you have given your students vital knowledge about their personal finances and provided them with the tools they need to become financially capable young adults.”
The Financial Literacy Certification program is an innovative and high-impact initiative in financial education designed to help high school students graduate financially literate. Participating schools teach a course on personal finance and then administer W!SE’s nationally standardized Financial Literacy Certification Test, which evaluates students’ knowledge of banking, savings, investing, credit, insurance, and money management, and also gauges their ability to manage their own finances.
The W!SE program, developed in 2003 in Queens and the Bronx, has expanded to 48 states nationally. It has been widely recognized for improving the lives of young people through programs that develop financial literacy and readiness for college and careers.
Blue Star Schools will be honored at W!SE’s National MoneyPOWER Conference for Financial Education in New York City on Nov. 5.
