The Port Washington Union Free School District’s Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School is thrilled to announce the successes of its young mathematicians during the annual American Mathematics Competition, a series of exams that build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge.

Among Weber’s 40 students that participated, three exceptional students—Kaisei Ui, 6th grade; Austin Hyde, 7th grade; and Cooper Denninger, 7th grade—earned high ranking in the annual competition placing them among the top 5% of participants nationwide.

Seventh-grader Austin Hyde was recognized as the top scorer at Weber with a score of 17 out of 25. Sixth-grader Kaisei, and seventh-grader Cooper earned scores of 16 and 15 respectively.

Kaisei was further recognized with a Certificate of Achievement for being a sixth-grader to score above a 15 out of 25. Collectively, Weber’s American Mathematics Competition 8 participants finished with an average of 10.5 out of 25, beating the national average of 8.5 out of 25.

American Mathematics Competition 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. It provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

In 2018, approximately 100,000 students nationwide participated in the competition, which is administered annually.
