The Wheatley School is proud to announce that the New York State Archives and Archives Partnership Trust awarded its 2019 Chodos Family Fund 1st Place Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records, Grades 9-12, to Ashley Vincenzo for her website, The 1953 Iran Coup: A Tenuous Western Triumph, a Significant Global Tragedy and 3rd Place Award to Rahul Ajmera for his exhibit, The 1902 Kosher Meat Boycott: The Real Housewives of the Lower East Side .
Congratulations to Ashley who researched how the coup staged by the United States and Great Britain to remove the Iranian Premier in 1953 led to poor relations between the U.S. and Iran. Her website was stated as being easy to navigate and included several features that engaged the reader.
Congratulations to Rahul who researched the protest by Jewish women against a raise in kosher meat prices in 1902. His exhibit featured a variety of primary sources and focused on the embracing of American rights by an immigrant population.
The Student Research Awards are named for Board of Regents Emerita Laura Chodos and her late husband, Dr. Robert Chodos, who created an endowment to encourage students to explore the wealth of historical records in New York State. The awards are presented annually to a student, or group of students, in New York State who have made outstanding use of historical records in their research. The awards recognize student work based on specific criteria: using a variety of historical records, drawing on information from those records, and interpreting and integrating that information with creativity and imagination.
Thank you to their teacher and Wheatley Media Center Specialist, Jo Beth Roberts, for guiding these students in their research and continuously encouraging them to create such impressive research projects.
