Searingtown promotes ‘pawsitive’ attitudes

Searingtown Elementary School has rolled out a new initiative to encourage positive attitudes and behavior. The P.A.W.S. Program, which stands for “Positive Attitudes Will Succeed,” acknowledges students for demonstrating good character.

P.A.W.S. is an expansion of the previous school-wide program, Kindness Kids. Similarly, it promotes kindness, but also encompasses the broader aspect of overall positive attitudes. When teachers, lunch monitors and other adults in the building see students doing something extra positive, they present them with a “pawsprint” cutout that states the rewarded action. Students may also receive a hand stamp of their “pawsprint” to bring home and show their families.

The initiative was introduced during a full school assembly about the Code of Conduct. Principal Diana DeGiorgio explained the purpose of the effort, and each teacher came up before the group to receive a “pawsprint” stamper.

Every class has a poster in the main hallway on which the “pawsprints” are displayed. Twice each school year, they will be tallied up and the class with the most “pawsprints” will earn a prize.
