Shake Shack opens in New Hyde Park

Shake Shack is doubling down in Nassau County.

The New York-based burger chain’s new location at New Hyde Park’s Lake Success Shopping Center, its second on Long Island, started serving up burgers, hot dogs, fries and its namesake milkshakes at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Shake Shack first set its sights on the space at 1570 Union Turnpike, formerly the Deli King Eatery, in September 2014.

Marketing studies led them to conclude New Hyde Park was a good spot for Long Island expansion, attorney Diana Prevete said last year. The first Long Island branch on Old Country Road in Westbury opened in 2012.

“Given our New York roots, New Hyde Park stood out as a promising community to bring Shake Shack to following the success of our Long Island Westbury Shack,” spokesman Edwin Bragg said in a statement.

Like the Westbury location, the New Hyde Park Shake Shack features some special frozen custard desserts, such as the “Great White Way,” the “Chocolate Caramel Crunchcrete” and the “Malt Whitman.”

It also serves beer from the nearby Brooklyn, Montauk and Sixpoint breweries, as well as Shake Shack’s house wines from California’s Frog’s Leap Winery.

The New Hyde Park restaurant was built using “recycled and sustainable materials,” including reclaimed barn siding and bowling alley lanes, to support its “commitment to green architecture and eco-friendly construction,” a Shake Shack statement said. It also offers food composting and energy-efficient kitchen equipment.
