Port Washington residents are invited to warm up for Super Bowl Sunday at the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce’s SOUPer Bowl on Saturday.
Fifteen local restaurants will try their hand at being crowned 2019’s best soup in Port Washington.
Residents who want a say in this year’s SOUPer Bowl champ can attend the event at Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church on Fairway Drive from noon to 3 p.m.
Featured soups include a white bean and kale and a seafood chowder.
Bobbie Polay, executive director of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, said in a past interview that the event was inspired by a similar one in Massachusetts.
She said in its first year residents were able to enter their soups in the competition but since then it has been focused around restaurants as an effort to promote local business.
She said 500 to 600 people typically come out for the event.
Soups will have a chance to win three awards.
All attendees are eligible to vote for the “People’s Choice Award” and for the first time this year, those who are 12 and under can cast votes for the “Kid’s Choice Award.”
Before the event opens to the public, a judges’ panel will determine who is deserving of the “Judges’ Choice Award.”
This year’s panel will include sports anchor Len Berman, culinary consultant Christine Sanchez, celebrity chef and newscaster Julian Phillips, associate real estate broker Anne Arter, contractor Joseph Canigiani and Geanna Johnson, a deaf-blind client of the Hellen Keller National Center.
The admission fee for the event is $10 for adults and $3 for children under the age of 12. Attendees will be provided a ballot and can sample 2 ounces of each of the 15 soups entered in the competition. Restaurants will also provide bread and crackers.
Some of this year’s contestants include Sullivan’s Quay, Bosphorus and Wild Honey.
Last year’s winner of the Judge’s Choice Award was Ayhan’s Mediterranean Market with a turkey, chili and kale soup. Wild Honey took home the People’s Choice Award with cauliflower parmesan bisque.
Proceeds from the event will help fund the year’s events held by the Chamber of Commerce. Attendees are encouraged to donate nonperishable goods for a food drive at the event.
