A South Floral Park man was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and second-degree criminal possession of a deadly weapon in Nassau County Court.

Brian Marshall-Gibson, 25, received the sentence for his involvement in a 2018 shooting that left a man dead.

Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said that on Oct. 19, 2018, at around 10:54 a.m. two men, Demetrius Winfield and a friend, a local cab driver, were in front of a home on Wellesley Street in Hempstead when Marshall-Gibson and another man, Jamik Cannon, allegedly shot the two victims multiple times. The two alleged assailants were arrested on Dec. 11, 2018.

Winfield was shot in the face, chest and groin and was pronounced dead at Winthrop Hospital. The cab driver was shot in the leg and is recovering.

The district attorney’s office said Cannon’s case is pending and it could not give any information on the details of the shooting because of that.

Cannon and Winfield knew each other and had gotten into a disagreement a few days earlier at a gas station, according to the district attorney’s office. Officials said they could not comment on the nature of the disagreement at this time.

“A young man is dead because of a senseless act of gun violence to settle a score,” Singas said. “We hope this sentence helps the family and friends of Demetrius Winfield in the grieving process as they continue to mourn his tragic loss.”
