Kiele Hwee, a junior at South High School, is a recipient of the National Gold Key Award in Photography from the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition.

The National Gold Key Award is the highest honor in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Kiele’s photograph first received a Gold Key award at the regional level, and then advanced to the national level of competition where it was recognized as one of the “most outstanding works in the nation.”

Entries into the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Competition were reviewed by art jurors across the country, including curators, gallerists, artists, and educators. Submissions were evaluated based on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

National Medalists and their educators will be celebrated at the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June. Kiele studies photography at South High under the direction of art teacher Lisa Stancati, and Karen Cuchel is the school’s art department head.
