South High Science Olympiad team earns trophy at Princeton invitational

On Feb. 9, the South High School Science Olympiad team competed at the third annual Princeton University Science Olympiad Invitational and earned a sixth-place trophy for overall performance.

A total of 56 teams from across the country participated in this invitational, which featured 25 challenging events covering a wide range of science topics. In addition to the team’s sixth-place overall trophy, team members also medaled in the following events: Designer Genes, Dynamic Planet, Fossils, Geologic Mapping, Sounds of Music, and Science Quiz Bowl.

The South High team outperformed all other New York teams at the invitational.

Members of the South High Science Olympiad team are Alexandra Agris, Jooha Gha, Bradley He, Isabelle Hou, Zhen (Tom) Huang, Katherine Hui, Veronica Khim, Michael Lu, Somya Pathak, Joelle Siong Sin, Ethan Wang, Jennifer Wang (captain), Jansen Wong, Anthony Zhan, and Allison Zhang. The team advisors are South High science teachers Dr. James Truglio and Nicole Spinelli.

The Princeton University Science Olympiad Invitational follows national Science Olympiad rules and prepares high school teams for competition at Regional, State, and National tournaments. The South High Science Olympiad team won the Nassau West Regional competition on Feb. 2 and will compete at the States in March.
