Manhasset comes up short against Garden City in Finals 8-6

The second-seeded Garden City Trojans upset the top-seeded Manhasset Indians 8-6 in the Nassau Class B Boys Lacrosse finals on Tuesday evening at Hofstra University, led by Jamie Atkinson’s hat trick.

Luke Keating added two goals for Garden City while goalkeeper Teddy Dolan recorded 10 saves.

Louis Perfetto led Manhasset with a hat trick and an assist while John Psyllos had three assists.

Steven Schneider scored twice for Manhasset while goalkeeper Brendan Haggerty stopped seven shots.

Manhasset head coach Keith Cromwell said their late rally couldn’t overcome a slow start to their rivals, Garden City.

“We give them a lot of credit and they did a nice job out there,” Cromwell said. “It’s tough to have our seniors go out like this. We played really well going into this part of the season and we tip our caps to Garden City.”

In the first quarter, Garden City outscored Manhasset 2-1 and outshot them 5-2.

Garden City drew first blood at 6:01 as JP Basile netted the game’s first goal.

Atkinson gave Garden City a 2-0 lead with 2:50 left in the opening quarter.

Schneider cut the lead in half for Manhasset off a feed from Perfetto with 1:33 remaining.

Garden City blanked Manhasset 3-0 in the second quarter and had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Garden City capitalized on a man advantage goal by Kieran Gunn 29 seconds into the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead.

Trevor Yeboah-Kodie added an insurance goal to give Garden City a three goal lead.

Atkinson closed out the scoring in the first half with his second goal of the game at 6:48, as Garden City rode a 5-1 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Garden City once again outscored Manhasset 2-1 but Manhasset outshot the opposition 5-2.

Atkinson completed the hat trick to give Garden City a five goal lead with 10:12 left in the third quarter.

Keating scored a quick-stick goal to give Garden City a commanding 7-1 lead off a feed from Basile with 5:02 remaining.

Logan Hyde scored a goal for Manhasset with 2:21 off an assist from Psyllos as they trailed by five.

In the fourth quarter, Manhasset outscored Garden City 4-1 and outshot them 6-3.

Perfetto paced Manhasset’s attack with a hat trick, while Psyllos added two assists.

Perfetto scored with 11:37 left in the fourth quarter off an assist from Psyllos as Manhasset trailed 7-3.

Schneider got Manhasset within three goals 36 seconds later off a feed from Psyllos.

Perfetto netted his second goal of the game with 10:07 left to play as Manhasset trimmed their deficit to two.

Perfetto completed the hat trick at 8:46 as Manhasset was down by one.

Garden City answered back with 5:50 left to play on Keating’s second goal of the game off an assist from Gibbons as they went on to win the Nassau Class B title 8-6.
