St. Francis Prep mounts annual art show

On Saturday, May 18, the award-winning, nationally-recognized art department of St. Francis Preparatory school will present their year-end Spring Arts Festival, which showcases each and every facet of the department, and the talents of the students. In all, approximately 1,000 Prep students study visual and performing Arts.

St. Francis Prep’s Art department was recognized by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in 2016 by earning the Program of Distinction in Visual Arts. According to Middle States, “The Visual Arts Program of Distinction identifies programs of superior quality, clearly articulated and comprehensive, led by qualified and talented instructors using research-based instructional techniques and strategies, and allows all students to develop an appreciation for and an understanding of the visual arts as a valuable and expressive fine art form.”

The show, entitled “Myths, Legends and Folk-Lore,” will take place at St. Francis Prep and feature student films from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. The gallery showing, featuring paintings, drawings and sculptures, will begin at 11:30 in Prep’s Art Education Center. From 12 to 1:30 p.m., there will be performing arts presentations in the auditorium. At 1:30, there will be a fashion show in the auditorium. The show will conclude with 100 students being inducted into Prep’s chapter of the National Art Honor Society.

Some new elements of this year’s show include a separate senior gallery, as well as craft sales, including student made jewelry. In all, an incredibly large percentage of students will have at least on piece displayed, or will be performing. Current Prep students and alumni will be performing live Jazz. There will even be face painting.

Tickets are $5. There is ample street parking.
