The Island Now - May 23, 2019 0
North High School recently hosted their annual Project Purple Week, sponsored by the school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club. The national Project Purple initiative aims to provide students and athletes with motivation and support to make healthy choices and deter them from turning to drugs and alcohol to cope with life’s challenges. This year’s program at North High included a visit from Project Purple founder Chris Herren, who led an assembly for ninth and tenth-grade students. His visit was made possible with support from school administrators and the North High PTO. Mr. Herren is a former NBA athlete who travels across the country to share his personal experiences with substance abuse and addiction. Mr. Herren first visited North High in November 2013 to address the entire student body, and that visit inspired the SADD Club to initiate Project Purple within the school. North High’s annual Project Purple Week activities include sharing information about substance abuse and addiction, as well as a series of morning announcements about drug trends in adolescents. Ninth-grade health classes also view Mr. Herren’s documentary in class. The North High SADD Club advisor is health teacher Lauren Mock. (Photo courtesy of the Great Neck Public Schools)
