The Art Guild is currently inviting photographers to enter artwork for “My Long Island: Places, Spaces, Faces,” a juried competition and exhibition.
What makes Long Island unique to you? There are as many answers as there are people. As artists, let your mind and your camera roam freely to show your special view of Long Island. Use your imagination, your graphic eye, and all your photographic skills to bring to life your individual vision.
The Art Guild advises photographers, 18 years and older, to avoid the ordinary; instead, present a fresh perspective. Artists are invited to submit up to three photographic works for consideration and high school students ages 14 to 18 may enter in the student category. The deadline for submissions is 12 a.m. midnight on Feb. 8. A prospectus can be downloaded at TheArtGuild.org.
The juror of awards for this exhibit is Katrin Eismann, an internationally respected artist who specializes in interpretive travel, still life and portrait photography. She is also an educator and the author of four acclaimed books on digital photography. Eismann is the founder and chair of the Masters in Digital Photography department at the School of Visual Arts. The exhibit will be on view at The Art Guild’s home, Elderfields Preserve, 200 Port Washington Blvd. in Manhasset, from March 2 to 24. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. An artists’ reception and awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 3 to 5 p.m.
Classes for adults and children are now registering for the winter/spring term. Adult classes include: Mondays — Get Sharp: Drawing with Stephanie Navon-Jacobson, Introduction to Abstract with Ellen Hallie Schiff, and Fundamentals of Drawing with Greg Follender; Tuesdays — Colored Pencil Beyond the Basics with Katrina Benson; Wednesdays — Watercolor for Beginners and Watercolor for Intermediates with Eileen Neville; and Fridays — Life Drawing (non-instructional) with Joan Stevens.
Children’s classes for ages 5 to 7 are scheduled for Tuesdays and Saturdays and for ages 8 to 12 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Three classes for teens have been added to the schedule: High School Portfolio Studio with Kristine Rivera on Monday afternoons; Introduction to Digital Art with Photoshop for Teens with Heather Heckel on Wednesday afternoons; and Empowering the Teen Artist for Middle & High School Students with Antonia Fthenakis on Thursday evenings.
Adult workshops for 2019 include: Modern Calligraphy in Markers with Howard Rose in February; Seascapes and Winter Scenes in Pastel with Lana Ballot in March; Painting the Floral Still Life with Jacqueline Kamin and Painting the Figure from Photographs in Watercolor with Ted Nuttall in June; and Painting in Colored Pencil with Cynthia Knox in July.
