Todd Kaminsky, Democratic candidate for Nassau County District attorney

The Island Now

Todd Kaminsky is an award-winning prosecutor who has spent his career serving the public. After attending NYU School of Law, he spent 10 years as a local and federal prosecutor working hand in glove with law enforcement to keep our streets safe.

First, as an assistant district attorney with the Queens County District Attorney’s Office working under Madaleine Singas in the Domestic Violence Bureau, and later moving to the Felony Trial Bureau working on gun crimes, robberies, and burglaries.

In 2008, Kaminsky joined the Department of Justice as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

As a federal prosecutor, Kaminsky successfully tried some of New York’s most high-profile cases, putting away violent criminals such as drug kingpins and gang leaders, including Jimmy “Henchman” Rosemund for drug trafficking.

Kaminsky was promoted to deputy chief of the Public Integrity Section, where he oversaw investigations and prosecutions of corrupt politicians – from both political parties – who betrayed the public’s trust.

Kaminsky successfully prosecuted then-State Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada on federal corruption charges for embezzling money from federally funded healthcare clinics. Kaminsky also led the investigation of then-Congressman Michael Grimm who was eventually convicted of federal tax evasion.

For his dedicated work as a prosecutor, Kaminsky was awarded the “True American Hero Award” by the Federal Drug Agents Foundation, the “Law Enforcement Teamwork Award” and the “Federal Prosecutor Award.”

Kaminsky ran for the State Assembly in 2014 and went on to set a record for most legislation ever passed by a freshman legislator.

After Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos was arrested on public corruption charges, Kaminsky won the resigned seat in an April 2016 Special Election.

As a legislator, Todd has been a crusader for honest government, public safety, the environment and Long Islanders’ quality-of-life.” He passed a law stripping pensions from corrupt elected officials and has sponsored legislation to ban outside income for politicians, bolster penalties for corruption and close legal loopholes that protect dirty officials from being prosecuted.

Todd has passed laws to keep the public safe and ensure dangerous criminals are held accountable. He got illegal guns off our streets, strengthened drunk driving laws and proposed legislation to combat hate crimes.

Todd sponsored legislation to charge drug dealers with homicide in fatal overdoses and introduced bills to shut down pill mills and hold rogue physicians who unnecessarily prescribe opioids accountable.

Todd has fought to hold opioid manufacturers accountable while securing critical investments in drug treatment and prevention programs.

What the candidate believes are the three most important issues in the campaign and their positions on those issues and a short description on why they are the most qualified person for the position.

The three biggest issues facing Nassau residents are opioids, gun violence, and corruption.
Gun violence: Kaminsky will work with law enforcement to combat gun violence by targeting the flow of illegal firearms. He will have a data-driven approach to pinpointing and addressing violent crime. Kaminsky has relationships with federal prosecutors who will work collaboratively to get guns off our streets.
Corruption: Kaminsky is the only candidate to have prosecuted any corruption cases at all, successfully putting away both Republicans and Democrats for charges of corruption, including Senator Espada and Congressmember Grimm. Kaminsky will take corruption seriously, going after those who have defrauded taxpayers — unlike his opponent who looked the other way as corruption ran rampant in Nassau.
Opioid epidemic: Kaminsky will take down opioid traffickers and dealers who bring poison into Nassau; make sure those who are suffering from addiction get the treatment they deserve.
