The Town of North Hempstead may restrict parking at a Mineola baseball field for nine months of the year.
The Town Board postponed a public hearing originally set for Tuesday on whether to prohibit parking in the Sagamore Ballfield lot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday between Sept. 1 and May 31.
The town-operated field on Sagamore Avenue between Roselle Street and Lee Avenue in Mineola, is used primarily by the East Williston Little League for practices and games.
Teams play games there on weekday evenings and on Saturday mornings and afternoons.
Businesses in the adjacent industrial area also use the parking lot during the day, said Joseph Scalero, Mineola’s village clerk.
Mineola officials are concerned that the restrictions would eliminate parking for those businesses’ employees and customers, Scalero said.
“Those cars are going to have to be displaced somewhere else, probably into residential neighborhoods, which nobody wants,” he said.
The town postponed Tuesday’s hearing so Councilmen Angelo Ferrara (R-New Hyde Park) and Peter Zuckerman (D-East Hills) could discuss the restrictions further with Mineola officials, Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said.
A date has not been set for a new hearing.
The proposed restrictions would not affect the East Williston Little League, which does not use the field until 5 p.m. on weekdays during the impacted months, said Chuck Fantarelli, a league board member.
“It would have zero impact,” Fantarelli said.
