A conflict over whether a section of Plandome Road in the Village of Plandome Heights would be plowed for snow took a major stride toward resolution last Tuesday at the Town of North Hempstead’s board meeting.
The half-mile stretch of Plandome Road in Plandome Heights is county property that the town has historically plowed, but earlier this year North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said the town would not continue to do so.
Now, with the Town of North Hempstead signing onto an intermunicipal agreement, Nassau County will pay the town $250 per day to plow that portion of the road.
“We will plow the county’s portion of Plandome Road,” a town spokeswoman said.
Village of Plandome Heights Mayor Kenneth Riscica said he wrote a letter to Bosworth in February, but did not receive a response.
In recent months he began talking to other local mayors about the issue, particularly in regard to safe travel during snowfall. It was then brought to the attention of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.
“I am grateful for County Executive Laura Curran’s wisdom and support to the Village’s advocacy on this matter,” Riscica said. “This was never about our small village but about the public safety of the 40,000 town and county residents on the Cow Neck peninsula.”
