Two police officers received letters from President Donald Trump commending them late last month, praising their “heroic actions” that saved three lives in Great Neck Estates.
Without fire protective gear, Great Neck Estates Police Officer Sean Murtagh and Nassau County Police Officer Kirsten Lorenzo raced into a blazing home on March 16, 2017, to rescue three people, including an elderly couple trapped inside. While Lorenzo escorted the woman out, Murtagh carried the man.
The letter from Trump, dated Nov. 28, congratulates the two on winning the Police Conference of New York Life Saving Award and commends them for saving the lives of three people.
“Your bravery and determination to serve, even at the risk of personal peril, are inspiring,” Trump states in the letter. “It is comforting to know that officers like you willingly confront the dangers threatening our community.”
“Melania and I hope that you have fully recovered and are grateful for your selfless service to your community,” the letter concludes. “May God bless you, and watch over all of our Nation’s brave law enforcement officers.”
The Nassau County Police Department posted about the letters on its Facebook page on Tuesday.
“It’s not every day that you receive a letter from the President of the United States,” the department wrote. “Well, just recently NCPD Officer Kirsten Lorenzo and Great Neck Estates Police Officer Sean Murtagh received such letters for their heroic actions in March of 2017.”
Murtagh said the rescue happened a long time ago and that since then, it has been “pretty quiet” in Great Neck Estates.
He also agreed that it’s not every day someone gets a letter from the president.
“It’s not something that happens every day and he seems to support police departments,” Murtagh said. “So that’s always really nice.”
