Two men were arrested in Elmont on Thursday after a driver was pulled over for multiple vehicle and traffic violations, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

According to county detectives, officers from the 5th Precinct witnessed a red 2001 Acura traveling northbound on Meacham Avenue before initiating a vehicle and traffic law stop in front of 1349 Hempstead Turnpike.

While investigating, officials realized 23-year-old Joshua Mordi of Valley Stream, who was operating the vehicle, had a suspended driver’s license along with three outstanding warrants.

As police officers were investigating the matter further, 23-year-old Deonte O’Connor of Uniondale, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle, exited and fled the scene on foot. Officials said O’Connor entered a Texas Chicken and Burgers restaurant where he  locked himself in the bathroom.

Additional units were called to aid in the apprehension of O’Connor before he ultimately exited the bathroom. While officers began to search O’Connor for safety reasons, he became combative and struggled with officers, according to officials. One officer was injured and transported to a nearby hospital to treat facial lacerations and contusions  suffered during the struggle with O’Connor.

Officers were able to take O’Connor into custody, and he was charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, according to officials. Mordi was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree along with multiple vehicle and traffic law infractions, according to officials.

Officials said the two were scheduled to be arraigned in Mineola on Friday. Efforts to reach their lawyers or a law enforcement official for further comment were unavailing.
