Dear Neighbors and Friends, So grateful this holiday season for the continued support of our membership and the dedication of our hard-working board members! Your involvement is what makes the Southside Civic Association vibrant, while ensuring that Floral Park remains engaged in the issues that matter most to our community.
Special thanks to Dr. Ken Fox, a cognitive behavioral therapist, who was the guest speaker at our last meeting. His insight on wellness issues confronting so many of our young people inspired an informed discussion. In the aftermath of the pandemic, Dr. Fox also provided valuable advice on how to manage uncertainty in these unusual times.
DECEMBER: UBS Arena With the opening of the UBS Arena and advertised plans for events almost every night of the year, a new level of uncertainty has been injected into our communities. The influx of traffic on game nights has made movement in and around Floral Park a challenge.
Moreover, many of our neighbors residing on the West End are experiencing quality of life and safety concerns, that come with bordering the arena’s parking lots. Noise and lights top the list of issues, but so is the impact of arena-goers avoiding traffic by hopping fences that border homes in the village. In light of these growing concerns, our Association is pleased to welcome back Larry Penner, a transit expert and retired employee of the FTA, the Federal Transit Administration.
During his 30 years at the FTA, Larry was responsible for the review, approval and oversight of billions of dollars of capital assistance grants to the MTA. In the last year, he has become an important voice in our communities’ attempts to understand the Belmont Arena Project.
If you are already feeling the impact of the UBS Arena and Elmont Train Station, and are frustrated by the lack of answers, this is the meeting for you! Larry offers incredible insight and is always willing to answer our questions. HOLIDAY PARTY @ Jack Walsh’s Immediately following our meeting, we will host our annual holiday party at Jack Walsh’s, located at 108 Covert Avenue, to celebrate the season.
