21-year-old Manhasset man drowns in pool

A 21-year-old man who suffered from autism drowned late Tuesday afternoon in a pool next to the group home where he lived in Manhasset, Nassau County police said. 

According to police, the man was in the playground area of the county children’s services housing facility with roommates when he climbed over a six-foot fence and entered a private residence next door on Plandome Road.

While on the private property, police said, the man jumped into the homeowner’s pool around 4 p.m. 

Police said he was found “minutes later” at the bottom of the pool by the group home facility’s staff. 

Staff members, police said, jumped into the pool, took the man out and began giving him CPR. 

Police said that after police and an ambulance arrived, the man was transported to a nearby hospital. 

He was pronounced dead at the hospital  around 5 p.m., police said.

Police said the man’s name is being withheld while they investigate the incident.
