Bomb threat called into Nassau schools was ‘unrealistic,’ police say

Nassau County schools were on alert Monday after an unidentified male called in a bomb threat saying he “put bombs in every school in Nassau and set them to go off tomorrow,” police said in a statement.

The call was “unconfirmed” and “unrealistic,” police said, but they did urge schools to be on alert for suspicious packages and unknown people.

Despite police calling the threat “unrealistic,” schools issued statements telling parents of the measures being taken to assure student safety.

Teresa Prendergast, superintendent of Great Neck Public Schools, said in a statement that the school had “been in contact with the school safety officials liaising with Nassau County police.”

Police patrols were increased at Nassau schools, police said.

Kathleen Mooney, superintendent of the Port Washington school district, said all of the school buildings were checked and nothing suspicious was found.

“District security has and continues to be vigilant and is on heightened alert,” Mooney said in a statement. “Specific security plans are currently in place and adhered to strictly. Please be assured again that keeping students and staff safe is our first priority.”

The East Williston school district continued its regular operations, but Elaine Kanas, superintendent of schools, said in a message on the district’s website that it “will continue to work with the NCPD to keep our schools safe.”
