Elaine Phillips to resign as mayor of Flower Hill after state Senate victory becomes official

Senator-elect Elaine Phillips said in a statement on Friday that she will resign as mayor of Flower Hill after the results of the state Senate election are certified.
Phillips, a Republican who was re-elected to a third two-year term as village mayor in March, defeated Democrat Adam Haber in the race for the 7^th District Senate seat vacated by Sen. Jack Martins (R-Old Westbury).
The village trustees will name Phillips’ successor, a process that’s mandated under state law, Phillips said in the news release.
“I have already begun discussions with individual members of the Board to ensure a seamless transition, so that village services can continue uninterrupted,” Phillips said in a statement.
The statement comes one day after Newsday reported that Phillips and Flower Hill officials weren’t permitted to speak with the media.
“It has been a great honor and a privilege to serve as mayor of Flower Hill,” she said in the release. “Working together without partisanship, and always in the best interests of village residents and taxpayers, we cut taxes, improved services, increased transparency and trust in local government, and created innovative solutions to protect our environment and improve the quality of life of our community.”
