Five Port athletes commit to colleges

Five students at Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington signed national letters of intent last Thursday to play sports in college next year on scholarships.

Lily Avazis, Brian Crawley, Molly Fetherston, Madeline Lavin and Rachel Rosen all committed to playing in college.

“This is a record number of students committing this early in a given year at Schreiber,” said Stephanie Joannon, director of health, physical education and athletics.  “I couldn’t be more proud and happy for them.”

Avazis committed to East Carolina University and will play on the university’s inaugural women’s lacrosse team.

Rosen will play lacrosse at Penn State University, a program that is part of the Big 10 and finished 14-7 last year.

Fetherston will play lacrosse at Adelphi University in Garden City.

Last year, Adelphi finished 21-1, won the Northeast-10 championship and lost in the NCAA tournament championship game to Florida Southern.

Crawley committed to Fairfield University for lacrosse, a division I program in Connecticut.

Lavin will row crew at the University of North Carolina.

Last year, the Tar Heels recorded two first-place finishes.

“They are all deeply committed to succeeding in the classroom, as well as on the field. On behalf of our entire district, I wish them well the rest of this year and in the future,” Joannon said.

Schreiber held a ceremony in the lobby of the school to celebrate the athletes’ achievement, according to a news release from the district.

“More Schreiber student-athletes are being recognized by quality collegiate programs, which is a testament to the athletic department, the Schreiber faculty and leadership, and our community for its support,” Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Mooney said. “While academics always come first, providing extracurricular outlets in which students can thrive is a very high priority here as well.”
