G.N. South High blanks G.N. North High 2-0

The Island Now

The Great Neck South Lady Rebels outscored the Great Neck North Lady Blazers 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

A pair of second half goals by sophomore defender Christina Soriano and senior midfielder Theodora Papadoniou propelled South over their Great Neck rivals.

Junior goaltender Silvana Seidita recorded 13 saves in the shutout.

South head coach Bill Neville said this game was important for the girls, especially when they are trying to compete for a conference championship.

“North is a very good defensive team,” Neville said. “We knew we were going to have a hard time cracking their formation. They put a lot of girls back and we just had to be patient and wait for things to develop.”

North head coach Erik Connolly said the lost to South was disappointing as the opportunities were there but they didn’t make the most of them.

“I don’t think we were out strategized,” Connolly said. “I thought we were outworked, out hustled and intimidated. My girls lost their confidence within the first 20 minutes of the game.”

In the first half, South outshot North 8-3 and dominated in the possession game. They were able to wear down North’s defensive corps in the attacking third but they couldn’t score off North senior goalkeeper Taylor Tehrani.

While Tehrani kept the game scoreless for North, they had a couple of breakaway opportunities against Seidita but she stopped both of them.

The first half ended scoreless.

North came out as the stronger team to begin the second half but they couldn’t break through against Seidita and South’s defense.

Soriano scored the game’s first goal with 27:45 left to play off a corner kick from Brooke Labonski to give South a 1-0 lead. Soriano said it felt good to score in her first game back from an injury.

“I feel proud of myself because I’m a defender and I wouldn’t be the first person to get the ball and score,” Soriano said. “I saw the opportunity as nobody was on me and I just went for it.”

Papadoniou gave South a 2-0 lead with 11:21 remaining off an assist from Madison Solomon. South held off North the rest of the way to earn a clean sheet.
