New York Institute of Technology

John Hayes of New Hyde Park was among 15 engineering and technology students who took a guided tour of the Mid-Day Storage Yard, part of the MTA’s East Side Access enormous project. The train storage yard, still under construction, is in Sunnyside, and forms part of one of North America’s largest public works projects.

During the visit, MTA staff members explained the organizational structure and issues relating to areas the students were focusing on.

Hayes, a mechanical engineering major, noted the complexity of the facilities on the site, including a signal hut, an electrical substation, and a vent facility (not yet operational) linked to the fire detection system.

When completed, the Mid-Day Storage Yard will contain virtually all infrastructure systems for communication, traction power, signals, and security for the trains stored there.

On April 9, Rija Ahmed of New Hyde Park was among eight students from the College of Engineering and Computing Sciences who participated in the 2019 Long Island Business Plan Competition. The annual competition encourages students from Long Island colleges and universities to think like entrepreneurs and develop their own business.
