Wesleyan University

Andrew Jacono of Manhasset received the Herbert Lee Connelly Prize on May 8.

The fund provides income to be awarded annually to a deserving undergraduate who demonstrates an interest in English literature and an unusual ability in nonfiction writing.

Jacono, who attended Manhasset High School and is a member of the class of 2019, is majoring in English and French Studies. 

SUNY Oneonta

Nicole Carnabuci of Mineola was one of 43 SUNY Oneonta students who earned a 2019 Senior Service Award recognizing commitment to volunteerism.

Seniors who completed at least 350 hours of service through the college’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community ere recognized during a reception on May 10.

The following students were celebrated as part of the Kente Graduation Recognition Ceremony: Nicole Carnabuci of Mineola, Roberto Vides of Port Washington and Jalissa Sanchez of New Hyde Park.

The annual ceremony recognizes the achievements of SUNY Oneonta’s diverse student population — African American, Latino, Asian and Native American students and non-AALANA students and allies.

More than 700 students were awarded scholarships at the university’s annual scholarship dinner on April 4: Lauren Bascelli and Olivia Boniello of Williston Park; Katherine Dorman of Albertson; Michal Golos of Roslyn Heights, Pauline Bordonaro and Karlo Vlahek of Port Washington; and Jalissa Sanchez of New Hyde Park.

SUNY Oneonta’s scholarship funds total over $60 million and are the result of contributions from donors, corporations and foundations. It is the largest endowment among SUNY comprehensive four-year colleges.

New York Institute of Technology

The following students were inducted into the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society: Michael Chamaidan a nursing major from New Hyde Park and Ilaha Jalilova a life sciences major from Old Westbury.

Students must have achieved high academic standards in the study of biology to qualify for membership in this national organization.

Jatin Jain a computer science major from Old Westbury, has been granted NYIT’s Outstanding Graduate Student Award. This award honors a graduate student who has made a significant contribution to the NYIT community and inspires others to do the same. 

The following students were inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society: Shebin Tharakan and Patrick Ekladios of Albertson; Roxane Ghadami of Roslyn Heights; Ilaha Jalilova of Old Westbury; Wassam Qayyum of Manhasset; Irma Bonilla and Shahzab Shah of Port Washington; David Erfanian, Chelsea Livian and Laiba Khan of Great Neck; and Chris Joseph and Milap Patel of New Hyde Park.

Only students who achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher during their first year qualify for membership. 

Nicole Simoes of Carle Place, Celina Zapiti of Mineola and Lydia Thomas of New Hyde Park were inducted into the Alpha Eta Honor Society, the national scholastic honor society for allied health students.

With the motto, “Together We Serve,” Alpha Eta promotes and recognizes significant scholarship, leadership, and contributions to the allied health professions.

SUNY New Paltz

William MacPhail of Port Washington helped lead the men’s volleyball team to its second title in four years.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team are the new Division III national champions, after taking down UC Santa Cruz in the tournament finals on April 27.

Coastal Carolina University

Taylor Taylor, a communication major from New Hyde Park, was a member of the Honors Class of 2019.

Honors graduates complete a rigorous curriculum consisting of at least 24 credit hours of honors courses while maintaining at least a cumulative GPA of 3.5. Each honors student also completes a final honors thesis or project which is presented in a public forum.

Muhlenberg College

The Muhlenberg College dance program showcased world-premiere works by seven world-class choreographers in its annual “Master Choreographers” concert in February.

Emma Parente from East Williston was one of the understudy dancers who took part in “Master Choreographers.”

University of the Cumberlands

Neha Patel of Roslyn was one of 29 students honored in the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program during its annual White Coat Ceremony.

The ceremony recognized students in the program who successfully completed their pre-clinical learning and will now enter 12 months of clinical studies.

The Citadel

Katherine Keller of East Williston graduated during the South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement ceremony on May 4, earning a political science degree.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Pervaiz Ansari of Williston Park was recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Ansari was initiated at Long Island University.
