Mineola man charged with murder

A Mineola man was arraigned Thursday for allegedly assaulting and killing a Hempstead man last month.

Marvin Yanez, 42, was arrested last Wednesday after an investigation into the Oct. 18 murder of 31-year-old Luis Estrada, Nassau County police said.

Hempstead Police Department officers found Estrada dead in Brierley Park at 11:52 p.m. with “trauma injuries to his body,” Nassau police said.

He was pronounced dead at an area hospital at 12:56 a.m. on Oct. 19, police said.

Yanez was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree assault. He is next due back in court on Nov. 15.

Yanez has no prior criminal charges, according to online court records. It is unknown who is representing him in this case.

A police department spokesman told Newsday there is no indication the murder was gang-related.
